The problem is, that the fastest route does not prevail. In the
existing system, the A10 is the fastest route from the north end of
the village to the roundabout (about 10 mins queueing time, usually)
whereas through the village is considerably longer (15-30 mins). But
people still choose the village route, and I think it's probably
because when they reach the north end of the village, they can *see*
the queue on the A10, but they can't see the slower queue in the
village.
Unfortunately they can't do the parallel universe trick and drive
both routes simultaneously to see which is faster. :-)
Perhaps what we need is theme-park style "estimated queueing time
from here" signs at the north end of the village.

PS. What's caused things to suddenly improve the last couple of
days? For the last two days there has been absolutely no queue at
all to get out of the Rowans onto the high street and past Tesco at
8am, when only a week or two ago (and most of the time since before
the roadworks) that would only ever be the situation in school holidays.
