In principal I too have no particular opposition for the cycle & pathway
proposal. Cyclists and walkers alike should benefit from any improvements
made available to them.
However, if the introduction of this footpath/cycleway will give South Cambs
the necessary leverage to remove the free school bus currently provided for
the children of Milton that attend Impington Village College, then I am
strongly opposed!
What I do believe is it's important to keep the two issues separate.
Without question our children have a right to a safe passage to school.
Surely the question must be that if South Cambs may make improvements to
provide a pathway/cycleway from Milton to Impington does that constitute a
"Safe" enough route, for example, for an 11 year old to travel by foot or
bicycle on a dark winter's evening on their journey home from school.
No amount of lighting or cameras would make this "safe" in my opinion - the
majority of the route is alongside open fields - who knows what could be
waiting!
I for one would be "accompanying" my daughter by car!
As David has already suggested, Ely residents would most likely pay for the
Free School Bus to be reinstated themselves!!
