Hi Nirmilla,
I'm a Milton resident and have been for 9 years. I personally don't have
any complaints about the village and location wise, it suits me perfectly.
It is very safe and there are a lot of young families for you and your
family to get to know. If you find the village life a bit too quiet for
you, then Cambridge is a short bus ride away or London is about an hour on
the train.
You cannot get directly to CRC (as it is known locally) from Milton, but you
can get there by taking 2 buses, 1 bus and a walk, bike or even walk there
(approximately 40 mins - I used to do it). You can buy bus tickets that
allow you unlimited travel within the Cambridge City limits (this includes
CRC and Milton) either daily, weekly or monthly. Stagecoach is the bus
operator and if you want to look at their website:
www.stagecoachbus.com/
Generally there are usually several places to rent in Milton at any one
time. I'm not a renter myself, but from what I know, a 2 bedroom house will
cost about £750 per month. On top of this we have something called Council
Tax which covers things like refuse collection, streetlighting, public are
grass cutting, police, etc. Typically this is around £100 per month. Then
of course you have your utility bills and groceries. For a family of 3 I
could live comfortably on £60 per week - but I know a lot of people who
couldn't do this!
Things like cable TV, broadband internet, etc are commonplace and very easy
to get access to and have installed. There are also other options available
if you want to have multi-channel TV.
Other than that, you don't need to register for anything else as such.
There is a doctor's surgery in the village where you and your family can
register. There is a large supermarket at the entrance to the village where
you can buy anything from food, clothes even televisions!
I don't know if you have ever experienced life in the UK before, but you
might find the people a little bit 'cold', ie not friendly. But all this is
is just a bit of shyness. You will find that if you just talk to people
(you will probably have to initiate the conversation - at a bus stop for
example), they will happily talk back to you and answer any questions you
may have.
Just out of interest, which island are you from? I have been to the
Caribbean a few times - Barbados and Tobago - and was meant to go to St
Lucia this year but the volacano in Sweden cancelled that trip for us. I
love the Caribbean and would happily return there for a long holiday every
year!
Well, I hope that answers a few of your questions and if you need any more
help, just drop me a line and I'll happily try to help.
Best wishes,
Matthew.
