On the other hand if the ticket machine at Waterbeach is out of order
(again) so you buy a permit to travel (PTT) for a quid and there's no
ticket inspector on the train (not unusual either in my experience) then
you get to London for a pound and it costs you that plus a single ticket
for the round trip.
Hmmm ... this probably doesn't work for vicars I guess? ;-)
Actually the first time this happened to me (I think it's happened 3 or
4 times now over the years) I was feeling particularly honest so I went
to the ticket office at KX flourishing my PTT to buy a return. The look
on the guy's face who served me was a joy to behold: he clearly thought
I was bonkers.
