the election count

Written: 04/05/07

On Thursday we had a turn out of 45.83% in the district council election and today the count took place in SCDC's council chamber at Cambourne. Although I wasn't involved with any of the candidates' campaigns this time I blagged my way into the count thanks to Hazel Smith.

We turned up in time for the "validation" part of the process, where they check that all the papers are accounted for.

You can observe this process and if you're smart you can get a pretty good idea of how the voting has gone. Colin Barker, Gerda's agent was there (although not Gerda until rather late in the day) and we stood side by side and counted the votes.

I use a count up/count down system so I was scoring +1 for every paper I saw for Hazel and -1 for every vote for Gerda (and ignored votes for Valerie). The count only once went negative but it took a long time to rise about about a dozen, faltered at around fifteen before finally taking off and by the end my count was +33 on several hundred papers. Hazel was seeing a similar pattern on the papers she was watching too. Colin Barker meanwhile was claiming it was too close to call ... which by this stage I didn't believe, but it cheered up Gerda for a while when she arrived.

After a break for a cup of tea the actual count took place.

Rather blurred shot of the count

The result was as follows:

    Gerda Covell   Conservative 584
Valerie Ross Labour 91
Hazel Smith Liberal Democrat   714

So Hazel is re-elected as district councillor for Milton.

For what it's worth I think I'm right in saying that this is the first time Gerda's slow climb towards a win has been reversed. She only gained 9, but Hazel's went up compared 28 compared to Richard's vote last year, this despite more people voting Labour than voted Monster Raving Loony which should have pulled down Hazel's vote. I suspect, as did Gerda and Colin, that this may largely be down to the Country Park factor.
