Milton book for saleWritten: 21/11/05 I am selling a first edition copy of "William Cole of Milton" by WM Palmer MD, FSA. This was published in 1935 by Galloway & Porter.
William Cole went to Cambridge University, both to Clare and Kings, and became a vicar, being curate at Waterbeach in 1768 and coming to Milton in 1770 where he lived at Milton House on Fen Road. Coles Road is named after him.
The book includes his life, and the section on Milton includes photos taken by the author in the 1920s and 1930s. Here's a sample page where he is talking about Milton House.
And here's a close up of the photograph.
Other photographs include this one of Queen Anne Lodge in Fen Road from when it was thatched.
And this one of Church Lane when 1 Church Lane was somewhat smaller and there was another thatched cottage on the corner (now replaced with our bungalow!).
Cole was most famous as an antiquary and he catalogued all the churches in Cambridgeshire. The second half of this book reproduces text and pictures from his "Parochial Antiquities" with descriptions of the churches and drawings by Cole and photographs by the author which may be of interest if you're interested in local history. The book has some discolouration on the cover and a tiny tear and the front inside fly but is otherwise in good condition for a book seventy years old. It's yours for £75.
Update: 2005-01-11 This has now been sold. However I may be able to source more copies if you're interested.
