election time approaches, again

Written: 06/02/05

The first hint that an election is approaching is normally a leaflet from one or other of the parties dropping through the letterbox. Here in Milton it's normally the Lib Dems with a "Focus" but this year the Tories have got in early with an edition of "In Touch With Milton".

As you probably know we're due a County Council election on 5th May and it looks like the General Election will be on that date too. The latter is pretty much a foregone conclusion as Jim Paice has a huge majority but the county division is potentially more interesting (although not that much more interesting, as the results last time show). The division covers us, Waterbeach, Landbeach and Chittering and our councillor is currently Jane Coston who sits as a Lib Dem and lives in Milton (she's also chair of the parish council).

Anyway with the election approaching it's time to start reading the runes and how better to do it than by reading the party leaflets. So let's make a start with this one from the Conservatives.

They're talking again about the state of the high street. A charitable view of it is that no one in the party subscribes to the milton-news mailing list or reads the village web site as they appear to have started a campaign to get the high street resurfaced. As you know if you do subscribe to the list or read the web site, some weeks ago it was announced that after several years of lobbying by your local councillors at all levels it's now in the budget for this financial year and that work should begin in April.

I'm also a little bemused to find the Tories effectively blaming the Lib Dems for the state of the high street. The County Council is Tory controlled and has been for quite some time, so they're criticising a council their own party controls. Party politics is very odd.

So what else can we deduce from this leaflet? Well it looks like Gerda Covell is going to be their candidate for the county in May judging by both this and her appearance in the local paper (for no readily apparent reason) alongside other Tories lauding another traffic scheme in Waterbeach.

Gerda stood here in Milton as a district councillor last May and came a poor third with less than half the votes of either of the winners, Hazel Smith (Lib Dem) and Richard Summerfield (Ind). She did show some interest in the parish council after that, and attended at least a couple of meetings, but we've not seen her there for a while, which is a shame.
