Milton - the hidden glenWritten: 09/03/05 Continuing the theme of other Miltons I'm a member of the Woodland Trust and I got a letter through the door this morning asking for help in funding their purchase of the lease on Milton Glen in Scotland.
It's a 754 hectares (1,861 acres) site which is currently over grazed farmland in poor condition. However some areas have escaped the intensive grazing, and important pockets of heath, grassland, wetland and scattered remnant ancient woodland remain, alongside 879m (2884 feet) mountain Ben Ledi. This site presents spectacular views over nearby Loch Venachar and with archaeological interest at the site in the form of Dunmore Fort, a prehistoric hill fort and Scheduled Ancient Monument. The trust intend to plant native trees on key parts of the site, encourage natural regeneration of woodland and ensure integral areas of open land are retained to encourage biodiversity. The large area of wader habitat contained in Milton is a valuable home for bird and insect species of conservation importance. They plan to enhance this to create a stable and lasting environment. The high slopes and ridges of Ben Ledi will be left unplanted to preserve the amazing open views and internationally important moorland habitats of the black grouse and ptarmigan. You can help by
donating online.
