lib dems in focusWritten: 01/04/05 A colourful A3 copy of "Focus" drops through the letterbox. Ah, you can just smell that election approaching can't you? It's a generic conmtituency wide leaflet so there's not that much fun to be had with it but we can have a go. Let's start with "It's a two horse race". Apparently "At the last election the Lib Dems pulled ahead of Labour in South-East Cambs". Well, up to a point Lord Copper. In 1997 it was 15,048 to 14,246 in Labour's favour while in 2001 it was 13,714 to 13,937. So yes, the Lib Dems are now beating Labour. But only just. And James Paice polled 22,927. So in essence if we're going to stick to that metaphor it's a one horse race with two old nags limping in a long way behind. A smiling young Jonathan Chatfield is going to ride the Lib Dems nag. Disappointingly there's no sign anywhere on the leaflet of either a web site or an email address either for the candidate or the party, locally or nationally. Oh well. So what else do we have of local interest? Not a lot. There's a picture of Jane Coston with Jonathan on a bridge over the A14. Initially I thought it was "her" bridge and then I realised that it's such an old photo in pre-dates the bridge - you can see in the background the site where the bridge was built. Let's hope for something more interesting next time.
