A total of nine people have been arrested as part of Operation Alford, an ongoing investigation into prostitution in the south of the county.
The first two arrests were made at an address in Cambridge at around 7am this morning, Wednesday January 11th. Two men, aged 40 and 41, both from Cambridge, were arrested on suspicion of managing prostitution and money laundering and are currently in custody at Parkside Police Station where they are being questioned by detectives.
Seven subsequent arrests have been made at addresses across the south of the county, which have been cordoned off and are currently being searched.
Operation Alford comes following Cambridgeshire's recent restructure of the serious and organised crime department.
Detective Inspector Dan Vajzovic, who has led the operation, said: "Prostitution and money laundering make up a small part of the total picture of serious and organised crime."
"However, very often it is these smaller operations that fuel the bigger operations, including drug and people trafficking and terrorism."
"By clamping down and disrupting these smaller operations, we can go some way to tackling the bigger problem."
Operation Alford is a culmination of months of extensive investigation. Today's operation has involved around 250 officers from across Cambridgeshire, as well as Norfolk and Hertfordshire, including dog units and specialist search officers.
Chief Inspector for Community Policing in Cambridge, Vicky Skeels, said: "We hope that today's operation will encourage local people and partners to provide information and intelligence regarding unusual or concerning activity in their area."
"We have Police Community Support Officers on the ground within the key neighbourhood areas, speaking to local residents and providing reassurance to the communities involved, over the next few days"
"I hope that today's operation highlights our work with local residents and that Cambridge City is a safe place to live and work."
