I'll try..
The tellers write down the numbers from the polling cards of those who
come to vote (and are willing to show them, there's no obligation).
These numbers are used to identify those people who support that party
and haven't voted yet. Hopefully those people get a reminder to come and
vote before the close of poll.
If you haven't promised support to any party you shouldn't get a call,
but if you have promised support to a party (now or in previous
elections) they may phone or call round to remind you to vote.
The numbers do reveal your name and address as this is published on the
electoral roll.
