The problem around Cambridge as in most of the UK is that the so called
cycle lanes are often more dangerous for cyclists and others than using the
road. For example take the 'facility' leaving Milton toward Cambridge. It is
basically the pavement which means cyclists and pedestrians are fighting for
the same tarmac. Pedestrians rarely manage to walk in a straight line and
these days often have iPods (or similar) on so sway back and forth with no
regard to the 'traffic' around them. In addition to this at peak times when
children are being taken to school there are often gaggles of small children
and double buggies trying to use the pavement. At these times it is much
safer for cyclists to be using the road!
Whilst I don't think anyone could argue that there aren't irresponsible
cyclists there are many more irresponsible drivers (and worst of all
irresponsible lorry and bus drivers) using the roads. I would welcome
properly thought out cycle lanes being installed along every route, however
I rather suspect that the great British tax payer won't foot the bill and in
most cases neither do they need to. In urban areas (30mph speed limit) there
is really no reason why cyclists, motor cyclists and drivers cannot coexist
and I don't see how further nanny-state restrictive legislation/advise helps
the situation.
There, it's said. Just my 2p and now off to sign the petitions!
Cheers,
Andi
Just for the record yes I do cycle each day and I wear a luminous yellow
coat and always use 2 sets of lights front and rear in poor light
conditions.
