Most Popular Baby Names

The most popular baby first names in the county this year were Oliver and Olivia Cambridgeshire Registration Service has revealed. It is not the first year that either name has been a hit for babies born in Cambridgeshire: each took third place in the name game last year and Oliver came out on top in 2011 and 2012.

2014’s chart-toppers, Jack and Amelia, retained a widespread appeal, dropping only two places in each case. Other names holding onto their place in the top five were Thomas, Emily and Isla.

Newcomers to the boys’ top 20 were Charlie, Max, Daniel and Theo and the girls’ list continues to be increasingly traditional with Esme, Martha, and Ivy reappearing after an absence.

Some of the more unusual girls’ names that parents registered were Araminta, an eighteenth century hybrid of Arabella and Aminta and Mirren, a choice that potentially pays homage to the acclaimed actress Helen Mirren.
Stirling, Archer, and Edison – all historically family names – were among the less common names given to boys. A number of unusual middle names, such as Wolfie and Elvis, were also recorded this year.
