Fifteen Years of Milton News

On 9th December 1998 the first Milton News mailing went out to subscribers so the list is now celebrating its fifteenth birthday. In those days:

  • Milton News was only a mailing list (called milton-news). No web site or Twitter feed.
  • It ran on the majordomo list server but as time went by it was switched to use mailman and then, after the Milton village web site was created, to use InfoStorm to send out news to people registered on this site who have asked to receive news.
  • The village web site has hosted on web space provided by the County Council (themselves then using a different domain name) and used AltaVista as its search engine.

The first posts, being in the run up to Christmas, include mention of the village panto and New Year’s Eve family disco, two annual village events we have since lost, and the cycle scheme through the village was in its early stages of discussion.

In subsequent posts you can follow the evolution of plans for the millennium and the rowing lake and there’s even our first lost cat (a role since taken on by milton-chat).
