Over 50s on their marks for Forever Active Sports Day

Older residents across South Cambridgeshire are under starter’s orders to secure their place in the district’s first Forever Active Sports Day, aimed to introduce the over 50s, and those returning to a more active lifestyle, to new activities which is being held in Milton next Wednesday (23/5).

With only 100 days to go to the Olympics, this event is set to complement a host of local celebrations for a big year in sport and raise awareness of the substantial health benefits of continued physical, social and mental activity.

Activities have been designed to suit all tastes, abilities and energy levels, from mixed athletics events, hockey, netball and football penalty shoot-outs, to disc golf, bowls, and structured chair-based strength and balance classes. Visitors on the day will also have the opportunity to take a guided walk around Milton Country Park. Those taking part in five different events will get a London 2012 souvenir.

Participants will step up to the starting line on Wednesday when the event takes place at Milton Community Centre, hosted South Cambridgeshire District Council.

The event is free to attend and includes a complimentary refreshment. You can turn up and register at any time throughout the day but if you would like to receive a full programme of activities and book classes in advance contact Helen Stepney on 07732 222905 or email Helen.Stepney@scambs.gov.uk

South Cambridgeshire District Council’s Sports Project Coordinator, Helen Stepney, said:

With the London Olympic and Paralympic Games fast approaching, this is an exciting time for participation in physical activity and this event is designed to help ensure that older people, as well as young, are included in the legacy. The aim is to get everyone moving more often and this event will do that in a fun, friendly way.

Encouraging people to stay active as they get older provides many benefits, it helps them to maintain independence, increase their social networks, get out and about in the community, learn new skills, increase energy levels and zest for life.
