The Cathedrals Express … but no “Mayflower”

As promised we got The Cathedrals Express through last Saturday but as Ian Blair, who made the effort to go down to take more photos in less clement weather than on its previous visit, discovered “Mayflower” wasn’t hauling the train as promised.

Class 47 'County of Essex' (C) Ian Blair

Instead it was hauled by a Class 47 diesel “County of Essex”. Ian tells us it was painted as they were painted by Stratford at the time of the Silver Jubilee and that these locomotives were at one time everywhere in East Anglia, but are now becoming museum pieces themselves (although some are still in active service). This particular one is in preservation at the Mid Norfolk Railway.
